LFP production in Europe: Technological milestone with signal effect

For the first time, a crucial material for modern batteries is being manufactured beyond Asia – a milestone that sends a powerful signal to the global industry: Thuringian-based IBU-tec commissions EDL Anlagenbau to design and build new facility

EDL Anlagenbau Gesellschaft mbH (EDL) based in Leipzig, Germany was awarded the contract to support – together with further partners - IBU-tec advanced materials AG in designing a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) plant – the first facility of its kind to be built outside South Korea and China, making an important step toward strengthening Europe’s battery value chain. LFP materials are essential for modern automotive batteries and are becoming increasingly important as the shift toward electric mobility accelerates. Beyond vehicles, they are also used in stationary energy storage systems and batteries for a variety of other applications.

With this project, the client, IBU‑tec advanced materials AG, headquartered in Weimar, Germany is sending a strong signal of technological foresight and its commitment to building an independent European battery industry. The process developed by IBU‑tec enables the production of LFP, a high‑quality cathode material characterized by its stability and outstanding fast‑charging capability.

The project services provided by EDL’s engineers cover detail engineering including civil and structural engineering, inspections, construction management, the preparation of the as-built documentation, as well as commissioning support.

The LFP plant will be built at the Bitterfeld site (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) and is scheduled to go into operation in autumn 2028.

The client’s trust in EDL‘s expertise underscores the shared ambition to transfer innovative technologies more rapidly into industrial practice.

„We are extremely pleased about our client’s trust and the award of this pioneering project“, says Daniel Oryan, Managing Director of EDL. „With our expertise in plant engineering and our experience in constructing large-scale industrial facilities, we support innovative companies in implementing new technologies. This project represents an important step in the transformation of industry – and at the same time in the transformation of our company.“

By implementing this EPCm project, EDL is expanding its activities into the field of battery-material production facilities and strengthening its position as partner in the realization of future technologies. At the same time, the project contributes to making European industry less dependent on Asian supply chains and to securing the long-term competitiveness of Europe as an industrial location.
