From concept to investment decision: EDL provides the foundation for green industrial projects with feasibility studies

Study on sustainable aviation fuel in Straubing successfully completed

Sustainable industrial projects do not begin with construction but with solid decision-making foundations for investors, operators, and public authorities. Feasibility studies play a pivotal role in this process, as they determine at an early stage whether a planned facility is technically feasible, economically viable, and capable of obtaining regulatory approval. They create transparency regarding opportunities and risks and assess different solution pathways. As an enabler of the green industrial transition, EDL Anlagenbau Gesellschaft supports companies precisely in this decisive early phase of project development.

EDL has recently completed a comprehensive feasibility study on the potential production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Straubing region. The study was commissioned by Flugplatz Straubing-Wallmühle GmbH and the Zweckverband Hafen Straubing-Sand (ZAW-SR). It forms part of the Bavaria Bio Fuels project, funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. The study examined whether – and under which conditions – regional SAF production could be implemented in an economically and environmentally sustainable manner. To this end, EDL evaluated suitable production technologies, potential technology providers, required site conditions, and the availability of feedstocks. The results now provide a reliable basis for further planning.

„We create a solid foundation for decision-making at the very beginning of a project. Our task is to structure complexity and deliver clarity long before engineering and construction begin,” says Jan Schwartze, Director Technology & Process at EDL. “Only when framework conditions, costs, permitting requirements, and supply chains are realistically assessed, sustainable industrial projects can be implemented successfully.”

For more than 20 years, feasibility studies for process industry projects have been an integral part of EDL’s service portfolio. These studies have included the evaluation of technical concepts, process routes, energy and material flows, as well as capital and operating costs. Since 2017, a particular focus has been placed on studies for projects in areas such as sustainable fuels, hydrogen production, de-fossilization, and circular economy solutions. Through in-depth process engineering analyses, robust modelling, and advanced simulations, EDL has expanded its expertise in the green economy and has successfully completed more than 30 studies during this period.

In addition to preparing sound feasibility studies, the Leipzig-based company sees itself as a reliable partner that supports clients throughout the entire process. EDL assists in defining project objectives, advises on technical and economic issues, and works collaboratively to develop viable solution approaches. Close coordination with all stakeholders ensures that the study does not remain a purely theoretical exercise but instead provides concrete recommendations for action that meet the client’s specific requirements and guide them safely through the early phases of project development.
