Global player in the chemical industry relies on EDL’s expertise for modern infrastructure

New jetty in German Rhine port

Efficient heavy goods transport by ship - one of the four Jetty modules on its way to its destination.

Leipzig, July 7, 2025 – EDL Anlagenbau Gesellschaft mbH successfully completed a project to implement a new jetty in North Rhine-Westphalia at the end of 2024. Leipzig-based EDL contributed to this project with its extensive experience and engineering expertise and convinced the client of its professional competence. The client is a globally acting chemical company.

New loading bridge optimizes naphtha unloading

To make the delivery of the required feedstock by ship, and especially the unloading of ships more efficient, the existing jetty (pontoon 2) was replaced by a new, approx. 160 m long jetty for a total of four loading arms and equipped with a new loading arm for unloading of naphtha. Vessels up to 135 meters in length can dock and be unloaded on both sides of the jetty.

Thanks to the new loading bridge, larger quantities of feedstock can now be unloaded efficiently and safely. EDL's scope of services included the demolition of the existing floating pontoon, basic and detail engineering, coordination of the project partners, and the procurement of the new jetty. The jetty was installed as a steel structure on driven foundation piles and equipped e.g. with mooring dolphins, pipelines, a hydraulic ship loading arm, a collecting basin in accordance with the German Wastewater Treatment Act (AwSV), fire extinguishing monitors, and a safety lifeboat/davit. In addition, dismantling work was carried out onshore and the necessary connections for product and utility lines were made. The project was implemented jointly with a German company specializing in hydraulic engineering.

Smooth transport of jetty components by ship on the Rhine

The impressive steel structure of the jetty, including the loading arm and piping, with a total weight of approximately 1,100 tons, was manufactured in the Netherlands. Divided into four parts, this structure was transported across the river Rhine by several push barges. After a smooth journey, the ships reached the German port, where the steel structural elements were unloaded and prepared for installation.

Precise planning and teamwork lead to project success

The entire process was a great example of precise planning, careful coordination, and close cooperation with all stakeholders to ensure timely handover of this important, deadline-driven infrastructure project to the client.

"We are delighted that our expertise and commitment have been recognized by such a prestigious client," says EDL’s CEO Daniel Oryan. "This contract confirms our position as a reliable plant engineering company in the process industry and motivates us to continue delivering innovative and tailor-made solutions."
